Kindergarten

Westside Preparatory School was opened in 2004. It has been operating successfully inthe heart of downtown.

The families of Greater Vancouver seek out our school for the unique approach in teaching in providing the very best education for students.  The combination of the best practices of Canadian and European methodology serves to bring up a well-rounded person.

To share our success we extend our services: Kindergarten Plus is opened in September 2009.

The Kindergarten Plus program is built with the accent on the academics and in a warm loving environment. In addition to the strong academic program students will develop critical thinking as well as social, creative, and physical skills.

Children will learn to read and gain mathematics and science skills. They will enjoy music, drama, visual arts, French, physical and outdoor education, socializing and play opportunities.

Your child will grow with us to meet the challenges of the elementary and high school with ease as well as they will be prepared for postsecondary education and success in all aspects of life.

The classes will operate from 9 am till 3 pm from Monday to Friday. The school runs from September to June. All statutory holidays are observed. Westside Preparatory takes two weeks holiday at Christmas and two weeks at Spring break.

Fees

The monthly tuition fee for full Kindergarten Day is $700.The school will not make any tuition allowances for absences or vacations. The enrolment of your child is for a ten month period and monthly installments are due the first day of each month.

Tuition Deposit

All parents are required to pay one-month non-refundable deposit upon enrolment. The deposit will be used as payment for the last month of school (June). 

Registration Fee

All parents are required to pay a non-refundable registration fee $100 upon acceptance of a space at Westside Preparatory School.

The school accepts applications for 4 – 5 year old children.
Please bring the following original documents, with an English translation if the original document is NOT in English:

The student’s birth certificate (showing parents’ names Canadian passport (if available) The parent’s I.D. document, Canadian Citizenship or his/her Canadian Immigration documents

Programs

The program supports the physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional development of the child through a curriculum based on age appropriate, fun, safe, and hands-on learning activities.

Indoor activities include literacy, science, math, social studies, art, drama, music, French and recreation. Outdoor activities include special field trips to community spots such as the pool, library and beach, as well as recreational activities in the playroom and community parks. Both the indoor and outdoor activities will enable the children to master the skills needed to succeed in school and throughout their life.

Kindergarten Program

Building Literacy Children will learn to read through phonics, will develop emergent writing and spelling skills, understanding of the alphabetic principle, phonemic awareness, basic sight vocabulary and printing skills. Children will have opportunities to practice their literacy through reading with others (ie. peers and adults), having a library area available with books and stories, trips to libraries.
Mathematics Children will say the number sequence by starting anywhere from 1 to 10 and from 10 to 1, recognize at a glance, and name familiar arrangements of 1 to 5 objects or dots, relate a numeral, 1 to 10, to its respective quantity, represent and describe numbers 2 to 10, concretely and pictorially, deal with simple operations; build and describe 3-D objects.
Science Students will use the five senses to make observations, share with others information obtained by observing, describe features of local plants and animals (e.g., colour, shape, size, texture), compare local plants, compare common animals, describe properties of materials, including colour, shape, texture, size, and weight, identify materials that make up familiar objects, describe ways to rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle, demonstrate the ability to observe their surroundings, describe features of their immediate environment.
Social Studies The aim of this course is to give students the basic introduction into the world of social studies. Throughout the year students will begin to take a look at the basic elements that make up our lives. They will be encouraged to start gathering information, participate in groups, and present useful information in an oral form. Through these methods students will start to look at the world around them and see how they and their peers impact the world even if in the smallest way. With these aspects in mind this course will explore the areas of identity, culture, society, governance, economics, and the physical environment.
Sports and Physical Activities Teacher will plan and implement sports activities for children including team and individual sports opportunities and games (such as gymnastics, soccer and basketball)
Arts & Crafts

Arts and crafts activities will be available on a daily basis, and will be open and flexible to encourage children to experiment with and practice their creative skills.

Recreational Play We will have an array activities including variety of toys, games, blocks, dramatic play materials.
Field Trips & Outings Children will have opportunities to participate in a variety of regular fieldtrips and outings in the community (ie. skating, swimming, science world, aquarium).
Music, Dance Children will have opportunities to participate in fun and creative activities like dance, music and role playing.
French Students will learn basic vocabulary and phrases and will be introduced to the French culture.


Letter Grades

Letter grades are not given to children in the Primary Program. The teacher will provide an evaluation of your child's development through written reports, comments in the Student Book, and conversations with you. This evaluation is based on the Ministry of Education's Prescribed Learning Outcomes for each grade level.
