High School
Our high school department is a co-educational, university preparation program. Westside Preparatory School provides a dynamic and successful learning environment, where our students enjoy school, make close friends and prepare for their future. The school is fully accredited by the BC Ministry of Education, and our graduates receive a Dogwood diploma on successful completion of grade 12. The high school department is a co-operative and nurturing place where both staff and students work together to achieve the best possible standards of education.
High School Program
Our high school courses cover a broad range of subjects in enhanced scope and depth. Knowledgeable and committed staff use a wide range of teaching methods to ensure that students are able to reach their full potential. Courses are planned and taught by dedicated, qualified teachers. We follow the curriculum set out by the BC Ministry of Education, and further use our freedom as an independent school to enhance and extend learning beyond the required outcomes. Our students graduate with excellent results in the Provincial Exams. Our students regularly volunteer to enter national and international competitions and have won some prestigious prizes. Recent competitions have included poetry, science and math. Throughout high school, students are taught values of honesty, integrity and co-operation as well as moral values. Interpersonal skills, communication skills and study skills are integrated into all subject areas.
Westside Preparatory School offers both compulsory and elective courses that are carefully chosen to prepare students for successful graduation and university entrance. Subjects offered up to grade 12 include English Language Arts, Mathematics, French, PE, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Music, Social Studies, Fine Arts History, Geography, and Psychology. Our courses in Business Education and Accounting are also very popular. Immigrant students may also choose to take courses in conversation, listening comprehension, reading, writing and Canadian Studies. Students in grades 10 – 12 may choose to take the graduation program with English support courses.
Small class sizes (10 – 15 students) are a key strength of the high school. Teachers and students work together, developing mutual trust and respect. At Westside, teachers are sensitive to students’ needs, able to get to know each student, assess their progress, and assist with planning to ensure that each student can succeed in their individual goals.
Graduates from Westside Preparatory School are academically successful and ambitious. They are responsible citizens prepared to cope with the demands of our changing world.
