AP Courses
ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM
The Advanced Placement Program at Westside Preparatory School gives students an opportunity to take college-level courses and exams while still in high school. There are 35 courses in 19 subject areas, offered by nearly 14,000 secondary schools around the world.
For 2011-2012, Westside Preparatory offers the following AP courses:
AP Biology
AP Calculus
AP Physics
Based on their performance on the AP Exams, students can earn credit, advanced placement, or both, for college and university. AP provides tremendous enrichment for a serious student, even if they do not intend to earn university credits. Students enjoy the challenge of taking AP courses with enthusiastic classmates and teachers. High school teachers find that AP courses enhance their students’ confidence and academic interest. Colleges and universities report that AP students are far better prepared for post secondary academic work.
If a student gets a “qualifying” grade on the AP Exam, there are thousands of colleges and universities worldwide that will give credit or advanced placement for their efforts. If, however, a student does not achieve a “qualifying” grade on the AP exam, it is still recognized that the student participated in a highly structured and rigorous learning environment. This experience alone prepares the AP student for further academic studies. In Canada, McGill and Queens Universities have participated in the program for a number of years. SFU currently offers credits for some Advanced Placement courses and advanced placement for others. The University of Victoria and UBC both accept students for Advanced Placement.
